Lela Belle Wolfert

The highlight of visiting Southwest Writers has to be meeting Lela Belle Wolfert. At every meeting, the President introduces all the officers and members of the board and states their titles and functions. But when he gets to Lela Belle, he asks us, "Who is she?" and we all yell, "THE QUEEN OF EVERYTHING!!!" She looks like a queen of romance in her elaborate and beautiful hats. I especially love the ones with the plumes. Here is her book of poetry:

Lela Belle Wolfert or Mrs. Wolfert as I knew her was my 8th grade teacher at Carl Steele Elementary School in Torrance CA. I would have to say she was my favorite teacher, tough but fair, and always gave me encouragement. I think about her often and speak to my daughter about her. My daughter has a love of writing, and I wish she had known Mrs. Wolfert.

My most profound memory of her was the day President Kennedy was assasinated as she scurried down the hallway to her room during lunch hour. We poked our heads in side her room to see her crying at her desk while listening to the radio coverage of the tragic event. That image has been engraved in my heart all these years.

Please say hi to her for me.

Thank you, Sue, I will! I see Mrs. Wolfert (Lela Belle) a few times a month when we do book signings together.

I was also a student of Mrs. Wolfert at Carl Steel Elementary School in Torrance, CA. I remember her in my 7th and 8th grade years. I have a picture of her, myself, Sue Skay and Cindy Wilson, the day of our 8th grade graduation in 1965. I remember her being very flamboyant in her dress although very fashionable before her time. I recently found Cy Levine on Facebook who also taught at Steele and was my 4th/5th grade teacher. After 50 years, I was recently able to meet with him and meet his wife. I also remember the metal bar she would throw on the floor when she wanted the students attention. It worked! Thanks for the memories Mrs. Wolfert.
